Bassinets on Bikes
- 2025-04-12 -
Today I had the pleasure of taking Major Tom out to run some errands, including picking up a bunch of baby supplies I found on Facebook Marketplace. I only really get to ride this bike about once a week. So, on the weekends, I carry the thing down a set of about 20 stairs (yes, this is difficult) and then run all my big errands with it. This means picking up a large batch of groceries and doing anything else that big bikes are needed for.
Today that was picking up a used bassinet and bassinet holder as well as a bunch of other baby stuff off someone from Marketplace. I had originally set out just to buy the bassinet, but the person selling was so kind as to offer a bunch of other additional things for next to nothing.
I have all kinds of thoughts about becoming a parent, but I will just say that the kindness and charity of other parents is something special and makes you really start to think about community a little bit differently.
Anyways, I took Major Tom up some pretty big hills through a beautiful cemetery[1] today and I did not have to get off to walk (although, a photo break constituted a strategically timed break halfway up a big hill). I'm learning more and more what this bike is capable of and how difficult it will be when fully loaded and going up hills. Still, I did manage to carry this load pretty much all the way home without stopping. What I may have advertised as a photo opportunity was also a break that I needed.
A big shout out to the guys at Pedaal, who set me up with this bike.

Also, it's quite bizarre, humbling, and eerie, to bike through a cemetery with a bunch of baby stuff for your unborn baby. ↩
