Taking it slow

I'm not a fast biker, at least not in an endurance, training sort of way. Not sure I'll ever be. Today I went out with a few people who are training for the Paris to Ancaster race. For some it'll be a 40 km ride, for others 70km. Regardless, it's usually a pretty muddy affair . I'm alright with some mud, but I'm just not big into the speed aspect.
But trying to hit fairly high speeds and sustain them, especially around Toronto is a bit of a disaster waiting to happen. There is too much foot traffic, especially on a beautiful day. But, I found myself trying to keep up with a few people who were zipping along, at least 5km faster than I normally would. We rode along lakeshore, up the humber river. It was a beautiful day, but there wasn't much stopping to enjoy it. And I'm not really into making my legs burn and ache by biking, so it wasn't really my kind of ride. I'm glad I gave it a try, though.
It's nice to know I don't need to rush. I prefer the kind of cycling where I can grab meal somewhere along the ride, stop to relax for a bit. I think what I might be interested in, is known as alt-cycling. I hadn't heard of it until I came across the term in a video by Bike Breath.
There are so many ways to ride, here's hoping we can all share the road safely and enjoy our time on our wheels.
