The Used Lock
- 2025-05-13 -
The weather has gotten better. I’ve found a new, more easily accessible spot for my Bullit, and I’m going to be riding this thing.
But first, I need a better lock.
I got a couple of recommendations from some friends and then decided to look for those suggestions on Marketplace.
I found one that had been up for about 6 months, so I messaged them and got a quick response. The process of meeting up on Marketplace is different from every sale, but this one required me to take the subway all the way up to North York Center, which I hadn't been to before.
It was totally fine to get there, and I had a serendipitous and happy circumstance of finding out that the owner of the lock also had a cargo bike; the lock was too long and heavy for their needs. We ended up chatting and shooting the breeze for some 10 minutes. We talked about cargo bikes, hauling kids, and other stuff. They told me about a cool device that mounts to the rear of your bike that allows you to tow your kid on their bike. Ideal for situations like helping them get to a safer trail where they can then ride freely and without worry (if only I could remember what it was called. (I couldn’t find it when searching, but this was the closest thing I could find, a reddit post with someone building their own, similar solution)
This is about as good as Marketplace sales get. I love these kinds of moments. The likelihood of running into this person to get it is slim, but it's always heartwarming to know that there are other people out there who are working towards the same goals as you.
